1 If Capital One pre-approves you for a credit product, you can be sure we’ll approve your application, except in limited circumstances. Some of the reasons we may not approve your application, among others, include:
- There’s been a change in your credit file information, personal information, financial status, or our credit decision criteria, from the time you’ve been given a pre-approval offer to the time Capital One makes a decision about your application.
- Your application is flagged for fraud prevention.
- You have an existing Capital One account.
- You’ve applied for a Capital One credit product in the last 30 days or had an account with us that was not in good standing in the last year. In good standing means not past due, over limit, fraudulent, restricted, or part of a consumer credit counselling program or bankruptcy.
- (For Quebec Residents only): In some cases, based on your maximum desired credit limit.
In some cases, we may not be able to open an account for you even though your application was approved. This can happen if we’re unable to verify your identity, or you don’t provide the required security funds if you’re approved for a Secured Mastercard®.
If you’ve received multiple pre-approval offers, accepting one may invalidate the others.
2 How checking won’t impact your score:When we check to see what type of card you’ll be pre-approved for, we request your report and credit score from a credit reporting agency. This is a soft inquiry that won’t impact your score.
After you receive your pre-approval and decide you’d like to apply for the card by selecting Apply Now, we’ll move your pre-approval out of this no-impact experience and into a credit card application. Selecting Submit will lead to a hard inquiry on your credit report which may impact your score.
