SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY WINS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP FOR EMPOWERING AT-RISK YOUTH THROUGH FINANCIAL EDUCATION

TORONTO, ONTARIO (May 3, 2016) – Simon Fraser University has been named the 2016 Capital One® Financial Education Challenge National Champion by this country’s largest student leadership development organization, Enactus Canada, and proud supporter Capital One Canada. The national competition took place at the 2016 Enactus Canada National Exposition in Toronto.

Enactus Simon Fraser University directly impacted 41 people and increased their financial assets by over $40,000 through their project, Count on Me. Count on Me is a 9-week workshop program that covers topics like budgeting, goal-setting, banking and job-building skills for at-risk youth and other community groups.

The Capital One Financial Education Challenge is a national competition empowering post-secondary students to develop and deliver projects that will educate Canadians on how to make informed and positive financial decisions that will ultimately improve their quality of life. The Enactus team from Simon Fraser University embodied the values of financial education to win this challenge by directly impacting 41 individual lives.

"Financial education is vital for strengthening communities across the country and Enactus Simon Fraser University is making these skills available to at-risk youth," said Nicole Almond, Enactus Canada president. "The results of their engaging and effective project are undeniable and have positively impacted at-risk youth through financial literacy skill development."

The 2016 Enactus Canada National Exposition welcomed 1,500 delegates including the country’s brightest university and college students, academic professionals and top Canadian CEOs supporting entrepreneurial action through competition, recognition and education.
