  CAPITAL ONE ONLINE AND MOBILE PRIVACY STATEMENT

This Online and Mobile Privacy Statement describes Capital One’s online and mobile practices and applies to anyone who visits our websites, Capital One-branded social media sites or pages, or uses our mobile applications. Information about our online behavioural advertising practices, including how to opt out, is also contained here.

This Online and Mobile Privacy Statement supplements the Capital One Privacy Statement, which describes how Capital One® manages your personal information when you apply for or obtain a product or service from us. These two documents should be read together in order to understand our personal information management practices.

Website visits and mobile applications. When you, as a consumer or our customer, visit our website or use our mobile applications, including when you fill out an online application for one of our products, we may collect certain information. The information we may collect includes, but is not limited to, your Internet protocol ("IP") address, your Internet browser, your device operating system, the date and time of your visit and information about the pages you visit while on our website or mobile applications.

We use this information for various purposes, including:

  • To help us understand our website and mobile application activity and to monitor and improve our websites and mobile applications;
  • To match several visits to our website or mobile applications to a single website visitor to understand how users interact with our digital sites;
  • To customize our website features to the type of device you are using to enhance your experience;
  • With the help of third-party service providers, to assess fraud risk when you apply for a product or service from Capital One or during subsequent visits to our online banking site.

Cookies and other technologies. We may use electronic technologies such as cookies to help us understand what parts of our products and services you find most useful. Cookies are small computer files that a website's server places on your computer to collect information on your behaviour, such as websites that were viewed and advertisements that were clicked on, as well as preferential information such as language choices and auto-fill fields. You may set your browser to reject cookies, but the functionality of the website may be impaired and the efficiency of your web visit may be impacted.

Social media platforms. Capital One has official pages on social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter, which enable consumers and customers to interact with us. When you engage with us through a social media platform, your use of that platform is subject to the terms of use and privacy policies of the social media platform through which you are engaging. Never include sensitive personal, financial or other confidential information such as your account number or mailing address when posting or commenting on social media.

Online behavioural advertising. You may see advertisements for our products and services on our own website, as well as on third-party websites. These ads may be tailored to your specific preferences based on information we, or our third-party partners (such as ad networks and platforms), have collected using cookies and other technologies as described above. The information that Capital One and our partners may use to deliver ads to you includes, but is not limited to, your website browsing or other usage behaviours, your personal preferences and interests on our partners’ platforms, websites or applications or on other platforms, websites or applications that Capital One or our partners work with, as well as your region and which applications are installed on your mobile or tablet devices. This information may have been collected, entered or otherwise provided on one device and used to serve you ads on another device. Our partners are subject to their own privacy policies; however, they are held to Capital One’s rigorous privacy and security standards, which include compliance with all applicable privacy laws.

For example, we may also use Google Analytics to track data on your visits to our website or mobile applications. This data may be used to show you advertising on any Google or Google affiliated website.

Managing your preferences. You can opt out of online behavioural advertising by clicking on the “AdChoices” link embedded in many of our advertisements, by adjusting your browser settings to reject cookies (though rejecting cookies may impact your online experience), or by using the opt-out tool available at the AdChoices website and by opting out for companies listed in this tool.

Changes to this statement. This statement describes Capital One’s current online privacy practices. If these practices should change, we will update this Capital One Online and Mobile Privacy Statement to reflect any new information you, as a consumer or customer, should be aware of, including any new purposes for which Capital One wishes to use your information. If you want to learn more about our privacy practices, please review the Capital One Privacy Statement.
